About Us

Sticks and Pics started when Jim Cawthorn, who has been a wood carver for many years, met and married Peg nine years ago.  They attended the Dayton, Ohio Artistry in Wood exhibit at which time Peg took an interest in wood burning.  For a few years they both enjoyed creating gifts for family and friends, until a neighbor encouraged them to exhibit at arts and crafts fairs.  After their first appearance at Bridgeton's Covered Bridge Festival, and seeing the response to their products, they have been busy making many custom articles.

Jim enjoys making all types of walking sticks, canes, carvings, and scroll sawings.  He has made many custom toppers for his walking sticks as a result of suggestions from people who have stopped and talked with him at shows.  He can top your stick to fit your interest too.

Peg enjoys taking the pictures people send her and burning from them. She has had many interesting requests from tractors to family homesteads, Gristmills and pets.  In her spare time she enjoys sharing her talent with others through small classes.

Peg is a distributor for Nibsburner and uses the P1381 Blue Ribbon on all her works.  Call her at 1-317-626-6944 or E-mail her at j.cawthorn@sbcglobal.net for more information on this unit.

             BIOGRAPHY OF PEG CAWTHORN

Peg was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and adopted at the age of 3 to a family from Indianapolis, Indiana, where she grew up.

Peg's early years were spent playing the piano and sewing with her mother.  They would make quilts.  When her mother passed away in 2002 she went in search of another hobby.  It was while visiting the Artistry in Wood Show in Dayton, Ohio in 2003 that she became interested in wood burning, as demonstrated by Linda Sales.

Her wood burnings are generally created on Basswood, but she has burned on many other woods.  Each wood burns differently and has its own beauty.  She also creates works on acrylic, leather and burlap.

You can view some of Peg's works at the Gallery on the Square at 51 Washington in Danville, IN.  Peg and her husband, Jim, a wood carver, live in Avon, Indiana and display and sell their creations at craft shows.  Peg is a member of the Montgomery County Woodworkers & Carvers, Womens Woodworking Guild of Indiana, Central Indiana Artists, Hendricks County Arts Council and International Wood Collectors Society.

                BIOGRAPHY OF JIM CAWTHORN

Jim Cawthorn started carving in 1989 for something to do during his lunch hour at work.  His first attempt was a Santa Claus that closely resembled an Eskimo when finished.  That first carving sold, however, when someone wanted a carving of an Eskimo.  Jim was born in Edmonton, Kentucky in 1943 and grew up in rural Illinois.  His Grandfather was also a carver in Kentucky and Jim always marveled at what he saw his Grandfather create with only a small pocketknife.

Jim loves to carve, scroll saw and make walking sticks and canes.  Every piece of wood has its own personality and character.  If that can be discovered and displayed, it is a job well done.  Caricatures are usually created from Basswood, Jelutong or Ginko because they hold detail well and are easily painted.

Jim and his wife, Peg, who is a wood burning artist, live in Avon, Indiana and display and sell their creations at craft shows.  Jim is a member of the Montgomery County Wood Carvers and the International Wood Collectors Society
